NEW EUROPEAN TEST REGULATIONS FROM JANUARY 2013

IF YOU ARE AGED BEWTEEN 19 AND 24 THIS WILL AFFECT YOU THE MOST SO WOULD RECOMMEND YOU TAKE YOUR BIKE TEST THIS YEAR.

In January 2013 the test will be changing to comply with EU regulations (again!!)

It’s all a bit complicated but the main changes are –

DIRECT ACCESS moves from 21 to 24 years old.

There is a new stage of category restriction for 19 year olds.

We try here to explain it as simply as possible by age, and what the differences will be.

AGE 17 – 19 No real change. This is an A1 licence. You still can only take your test on a 125cc bike (14.6bhp/11KwH). BUT after you pass your test you still cannot ride a bike larger than the restrictions above until you pass ANOTHER TEST, called A2.

A2 TEST (for aged 19 and over) – This test has to  be taken on a minimum size of 395cc (46.6bhp/35Kwh) when you are at least 19 years old or 2 years after passing your A1 as per above. BUT after you pass you are ALWAYS restricted to 46.6bhp (35Kwh) THIS WILL NEVER INCREASE. But see Direct Access below.

FULL A (DIRECT ACCESS) – The minimum age rises here from 21 to 24. The engine size must be at least 595cc (54bhp/40Kwh). You must be at least 24. OR you can take the test 2 years after passing your A2 (explained above). So you CAN still have your full licence at 21 (as you can at the moment) but ONLY IF you passed your A2 test earlier.

SIMPLES EH!!
